Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC)

Information for incoming students

What are EILCs?

The Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC) are specialised courses in the less widely used and less taught languages organised in the countries where these languages are used as teaching languages at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The languages English, German, French and Spanish (Castilian) are not eligible for EILC.

The EILCs take place in the following countries for the eligible languages in brackets: Belgium (Dutch), Bulgaria (Bulgarian), Croatia (Croatian), Cyprus (Greek), Czech Republic (Czech), Denmark (Danish), Estonia (Estonian), Finland (Finnish and Swedish), Greece (Greek), Hungary (Hungarian), Iceland (Icelandic), Italy (Italian), Latvia (Latvian), Lithuania (Lithuanian), Malta (Maltese), the Netherlands (Dutch), Norway (Norwegian), Poland (Polish), Portugal (Portuguese), Romania (Romanian), Slovakia (Slovak), Slovenia (Slovenian), Spain (Basque, Galician, Catalan or Valencian), Sweden (Swedish), Switzerland (Italian) and Turkey (Turkish).
 

Who can apply?

Students who have been selected for an Erasmus study/placement period in one of the organising countries or regions have the opportunity to get to know their languages and cultures for two to six weeks with the aim of being prepared for the Erasmus mobility period. They may receive a supplementary mobility grant awarded and paid by their home institutions to help cover extra costs. 

Students whose main subject of study is the language of the country or region organising the EILC are normally not eligible participants.

Comenius and Grundtvig Assistants may also participate, provided that there is a surplus of places on a course.

Students may not be charged a tuition fee for participation in an EILC course. However, fees may be charged for optional events.

The application form should be filled electronically by the Erasmus students and sent by his home institution to the EILC organising institutions. The addresses to be sent to are provided in the Organising Institutions Information Forms (see list of courses below).

Comenius and Grundtvig Assistants apply directly to the EILC host institution.

Please note that applications sent to the Spanish National Agency (OAPEE) and not to the EILC Organising Institutions will not be accepted.

Note that due to the number of students allowed per class (between 10 and 20), OIs are not able to accept all applications. Applications are selected according to several criteria: applications received in due form, priority given to longest mobility periods, balanced participation regarding geographical spread and subject areas, etc. 
 

EILC in Spain (2013-14)

EILC are organised in Basque (Basque Country, Navarre), Galician (Galicia), Catalan or Valencian (Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Community of Valencia).

Erasmus students selected for a mobility period (studies or placements) in one of these regions may apply for courses within the following list. (Please note that the EILC Organising Institution may not necessarily be your host institution):
